What is Raw Hide?
Raw hide is the dried and prepared skin of either cattle or pork. It has been used as a treat or chew toy for pet dogs.
For a long time raw hide has been promoted as a great dog treat to help clean teeth and increase oral health. However, there are more cons than pros when it comes to rawhide.
Associated risks;
Choking hazard - Dogs have been know to swallow large pieces of raw hide that can easily become lodged in your pet's throat.
Digestive problems & Intestinal blockage - When swallowed, rawhide swells in stomachs - sometimes up to four times its original size! This can cause blockages and indigestion.
Contamination - A big concern with rawhide is contamination of salmonella to you if you come into contact with the chew.
Tooth damage - Rawhide has been known to cause fractures to dog's teeth
