Updated: Aug 12, 2021

What is Raw Hide?

Raw hide is the dried and prepared skin of either cattle or pork. It has been used as a treat or chew toy for pet dogs.

For a long time raw hide has been promoted as a great dog treat to help clean teeth and increase oral health. However, there are more cons than pros when it comes to rawhide.

Associated risks;

  • Choking hazard - Dogs have been know to swallow large pieces of raw hide that can easily become lodged in your pet's throat.

  • Digestive problems & Intestinal blockage - When swallowed, rawhide swells in stomachs - sometimes up to four times its original size! This can cause blockages and indigestion.

  • Contamination - A big concern with rawhide is contamination of salmonella to you if you come into contact with the chew.

  • Tooth damage - Rawhide has been known to cause fractures to dog's teeth
